Alysia Chang

Vocalist/Tutor

Alysia Chang is a jazz vocalist/tutor who spent her early days singing at the Charles Playhouse Lounge and the Choppin’ Block on Mission Hill, Boston every week. The Block soon became a hotbed for aspiring jazz musicians to sit in for jazz jams. Alysia has since performed in and around the Boston area at venues such as Costello's, Natick Center for the Arts, The Lilypad, Ryles, Cantab Lounge, and many private functions.

Her vocal jazz ensemble at Lawrence University won Best Collegiate Vocal Jazz Ensemble in Downbeat magazine and performed with professional jazz musicians such as Marlene Shaw.

She has been featured in the Go! column in the Boston Globe and has performed with many Boston musicians such as David Rumpler, Patrick Battstone, James Merenda, and the Mingus Three.

Earlier lessons and direction from vocalist Mara Hazzard as a classical music student heavily influences Alysia’s style. Having studied Vocal Jazz Performance at the New England Conservatory, she was taught by Rebecca Shrimpton and Vanessa Morris at that time.

In addition, Alysia often collaborated with Joel Larue Smith , the late flute/accordion player Jen Bliss, as well as pianist Murray Barg on a range of pieces including operatic and art songs as well as jazz and spiritual works . She currently works in arts management while  teaching voice lessons at her studio in Arlington, Massachusetts. and sings in the Cantilena Womens Chorus
